MODULAR MOVE Making Room at the World’s Busiest Airport

BY FRANK RUCKER AND ROSS PAYTON

s the most traveled, efficient and resilient airport in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta

for its passengers and operations. Corgan , in partnership with Good Van Slyke Architecture , was enlisted to facilitate the planning, architecture and interior design of the expansion, and the team came up with a unique approach to keep the concourse fully operational for its more than 320 flights per day. Modular Construction A brilliantly innovative multi-phased modular construction approach was developed to minimize disruptions to daily operations. The ingenuity of this construction method enabled the airport to remain operational while significantly reducing gate closure time and streamlining the overall project timeline. While modular construction itself is not new, this is the first time it has been used at ATL.

Above: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is using a multi-phased modular construction approach on its Concourse D construction, allowing the airport to remain operational while educing gate closure time and streamlining the overall project timeline.

International Airport (ATL) transported more than 108 million passengers in 2024, up from 104 million the year before. To keep up with increasing passenger numbers, ATL received $1.4 billion in funds for an expansion and modernization project for Concourse D. Currently the narrowest concourse at the airport, Concourse D was originally built in the 1970s for small regional aircraft. The new concourse, which will increase the building size by more than 60%, will accommodate larger airplanes as well as regional jets for the Delta hub, provide more food and beverage options, larger restrooms and more spacious gate lounges for travelers. Airport leadership wanted the expansion to be as seamless as possible
